The CropReporter uses LED (light emitting diode) induced direct fluorescence imaging technology to image the plant health/stress status by calculation of Fv/Fm (variable fluorescence over saturation level of fluorescence). Within a short time interval (≈800 ms) multiple images are captured.
Plant parts contain chlorophyll and show fluorescence. Using a measuring protocol the minimal fluorescence, F0, and the maximum fluorescence, Fm, are captured by the camera. From these two images the maximum efficiency of photosynthesis of Photosystem II is calculated.
Using the reflection image of the chlorophyll filter and a reference image in the NIR an image was calculated that is a measure for chlorophyll content.
Using the reflection image of the anthocyanin filter and a reference image in the NIR an image was calculated that is a measure for anthocyanin content.
Early detection of damage
Photosynthesis is a process that is response earlier to different stresses than the colour change of a plant does. Because of this effect you can see large differences with the PSII system and this is not visible yet by eye.
Efficiency photosynthesis measured with mobile platform
By using a mobile platform to move the camera systems the camera’s can be used in any environment and location. Every camera system can be made mobile.
To demonstrate the influence of two different types of herbicides, plants (whole plants) were sprayed with a formulation with the active ingredient bentazon. This is a herbicide that inhibits the photosynthesis on a whole plant level.
